How not to compete for expensive Google Adwords.

Competition. We have all experienced it. Some of us have more of it than others. Why are some businesses surrounded by flames, drowning in the noise of the competition, while others seem to thrive and soar forth from the fire like a phoenix?

If you’ve experienced intense competition, learning how to position your business as unique can help. Think of the scenario where you have an online store where the products you offer are also sold by 20+ other online stores, albeit at lower price. If you can figure out how to compete in that scenario, don’t you think you can figure it out elsewhere? Perhaps these techniques can apply to you.

Do you hear yourself saying “Google Adwords for my category are too expensive”? If you answered yes, then listen up.

I know the drill. I’ve been there. I’ve had a business, an online store, where each of the products I sold was also available through numerous other online retailers and at a lower price. So how did I grow that business to produce over 6-Figures of recurring income?

Position Yourself as Unique

One technique to position your business as unique in the marketplace is to define a niche.

How do you become unique when there are hundreds in your niche?

1)      Get exclusivity: Get an exclusive license to distribute a particular product line.

2)      Create unique products. Become a creator, manufacturer or importer of unique goods or services.

3)      Carve out a niche to promote your products.

Carve out a niche

Identify a niche and position yourself uniquely in that niche. Anyone can do it. You just have to train your brain to think a little differently.

You see, while most people are selling their products and services based on topic, or category or supplier or brand, very few actually promote their products based on the solution they provide the customer. Focus on the solution, and you can set yourself apart from the field.

“What does this actually mean? How do I apply this?” You ask. Let me give you an example.

My company sold contemporary furniture and accessories. So I spent time paying for Google Adwords related to bed, dresser and nightstand unsuccessfully. These Google Adwords were too expensive. And there was too much competition. I had a little success buying keywords based on the name of the designer of one particular product line. But, the people searching by the designer’s name were looking for the lowest cost. I didn’t want to nor could I afford to lower our profit margins by competing on price. Sound like a familiar scenario?

What happened next transformed the business. You see, while talking with the supplier one day I asked “Why do you think people buy your product? What is the big appeal?”

You know what he said? “Storage. Originally the designer created this line because there was no space in the apartments here in the city. So people bought the beds to get more storage.”

That 2 minute conversation transformed my business into producing a 6-figure a year income with NO COMPETITION.

Focus on the solution

I went home and switched our Google Adwords to “storage beds”. Our customers were looking for a solution. We were the only ones to give them a solution that also made a design statement. Style and function in one.

Our customers were now buying from us because we offered a solution to their problem of no storage. There was no one else selling this product line as a solution. Our customers didn’t even know that the product was available elsewhere. They thought it was exclusive to us. Why? No one else thought to sell the solution to the customer. Everyone else was still competing for the people seeking the brand; the ones that wanted the cheapest price. We kept our margins and got more customers.

How can you find a niche for your non-unique product or service where your competitors aren’t competing for the same keyword? Can you focus on the solution?

When you are trying to sell your goods, services or programs online through your ecommerce site, it can be very daunting to rise above the noise of the competition and separate yourself from the pack. Trying to get your ecommerce business listed on the first page of Google and the other search engines can be an extensive and sometimes expensive process. This is especially true when you have an online store in a highly competitive field.

So, what are you to do?

Create a niche.

One solution is to further define your niche or area of expertise. Focus, Focus, Focus.

You need to find a way to refine your online store offerings so that they speak more powerfully to a smaller group of people.

Identify who has the need

One way to refine your niche is to identify a specific need of one of your customers and talk directly to it. You can create a landing page of sorts for that one application of your business. Then talk to the pain of the customer. Identify with them that you understand where they are coming from. Then, and only then, you should talk about the possibilities to achieve from your product, service or program. Back up your claims with examples, stories and proof.


A second way to define your niche is to do some research about what your customers want. I quick poll or survey or even a phone call can get you some more information to tell you what direction to go in.

Find Long-tail Keywords

A third way is to search on keywords related to your business and find what they call “long-tail keywords” which are actually phrases that have to do with your online store. Look for phrases that someone might type in when they are looking for your product or service. Then look for a narrower selection. For example, when looking to market my teleclass “5 Simple Strategies to a 6-Figure Online Store”, instead of trying to compete for the phrase “online store” I looked for phrases like “How to create an online store”. This phrase shows someone who is looking for information (how-to) and they are not necessarily looking to build it themselves because they used the word “create” as opposed to “build” which was another popular keyword.

Create a Solution

The fourth way to define a niche for your online store is to focus on an application of the product or service you provide. For example, if you sell all aromatherapy products you can segment your products into solutions for your customer. This might look like having a landing page for all products that heal back pain. Or perhaps one page for each back pain problem your products can heal.

These strategies will help you to refine your product mix in your online store and tailor it more closely to what your customers want to buy, thereby helping you to get more traffic to your online store and convert more sales.

Did you start your own ecommerce business only to find there were no customers, no web-site traffic and no sales? You worked hard and put in long hours to set it up then you had to find products to sell and set up an account with their suppliers. You opened the doors to your online store but nobody came and there were no sales.

What are you to do?

You aren’t alone.

Every year thousands of people start an online store in hopes of replacing their existing income and earning passive residual income. They hope that an online store will generate enough income to let them work from home, have flexible hours and set their own schedule. They dream of getting orders while lying on the beach, skiing down the mountain or just staying home with their kids.

But what they find is that they work longer hours than if they had a corporate job and the lack of sales keeps them awake at night. And no matter what they do or how hard they work, the situation doesn’t seem to improve. They still have no sales from their online store.

In order to improve their situation and get sales from your ecommerce business, you need to understand some fundamental internet strategies.

Online Store sales are dependent on 6 key marketing principles. You see, unless you understand these principles, your efforts to increase your internet sales will be futile.

To begin with you need to know who your online store customer is and what is causing them to seek a your product or service.  You see, they aren’t just shopping for the fun of it or browsing for their enjoyment (well, not most of the time). They are usually looking to solve a problem or eliminate a pain they are having. What you need to do with your ecommerce site is to address that pain and provide them with a solution.

Unless you can identify the pain by relating to your customer, you will not be able to increase your internet sales. This is the most important thing you can do. Empathize with their pain and provide a solution or answer to the problem.

It really is that simple to increase your online store sales.

You need to learn to think like your customer.

Focus on what your customer wants, needs or desires, then be relatable and empathetic, and be of service to your customer.

Be as specific as possible. You may have to define a niche within your area of expertise. Or maybe even several niches. Think of just one of your customers. What specific problem or pain can you fix? Another way to look at this is to think of just one product or service you have. Why did your customer buy that product or service from you? What did they hope it would do for them?

Once you identify what the pain is, you need to write down phrases (also known as keywords) that describe what your customer was seeking. What are the words, phrases or keywords that they would type into a search engine to find the solution to their problem? Write those down.

That’s how you narrow down the keywords you use to drive customers to your online store. You need to learn to think like your customer. You need to think, if you were your customer “what would take my pain away?” That is how you communicate and build a relationship with the people who will eventually buy from you.

If you don’t have customers now, ask friends and family or people who should be your clients how they go about looking for the solutions that you offer. Your best method for getting more sales with your ecommerce site is always going to be based on what your customer needs. So you need to get clear on who your customer is and what they desire that would attract them to your online store. Remember; be specific in talking to their pain. The best technique is to think about one specific person rather than a group. You need to be able to connect with their pain. You can do that better when thinking about one person than you can when you think about a whole group.

So do your research and apply your learning to your communications with your customer and you will see that your online store sales will improve.
